Phoebus vs Bethel
Now I can see why the PD football has gone down.

Could you elaborate please? I live in Central VA, have seen a lot of teams from around the state, have seen the championship Phoebus teams, but I'm not that familiar with PD football overall. I watched that video and it looked like poor offensive line play more than good defense to me by both teams. Neither QB is a good passer. Teams this year will do what Bethel did and load the box against Phoebus and dare them to pass. To me, Phoebus doesn't have the players to run that power offense like they used to have. Sure they hurt themselves with penalties, but Bethel did, too.
I'm interested in seeing how Phoebus will fare in 3A. My early assessment is they will struggle against a team like James Monroe or Magna Vista in the playoffs, having seen both of them, and maybe even Brookville and Western Albemarle. I wish the Phoebus/Western scrimmage wasn't cancelled, as that would've given me an early idea of the different match-ups.

Early September is not really a good indication of how well anyone is going to be. I totally agree with your assessment of last Friday's game. You were dead on so there is nothing more for me to elaborate on. This is not the same Phoebus team of old but when the QB play is so poor, it leaves no other choice but to resort to a power game. We have to go back to our roots and these kids are working hard to do just that. It's a work in progress but trust me when I tell you, Phoebus will get drastically better real soon. The difference between this year's team and teams past, this team will not get off to as fast a start as years past. We'll get better. Believe it! Just remember those teams you mentioned above once we meet one come December.

Bethel shut down a good Indian River team in week one while Phoebus has only given up 6 total points in 8 quarters and 3 OTs. I can understand how Phoebus get a bit better each week. You have to be concerned with how small this team really is. I am glad we moved down a division. The days of the old Phoebus are clearly behind us. Defense is very important it keeps you in games. Teams are going to continue to stack the box. We should get our offense going against Menchville and start building some confidence with the passing game.

Let's also not forget that Phoebus doesn't have the large talent pool to pick from and depth of players. Back in the day their second teams (offense, defense) could compete at least middle of the pack level. Now we are looking at 38- 39 players total vs 55-60 players in the good years. There were times we had two starting qbs and 3 starting rbs and one of the best FG kickers in the state every year. So don't look too hard for something that's not there. Maybe, just maybe JB and the coaching staff can pull this one off. It starts there.

Phoebus' line and QB will have to get a lot better in a hurry. If so then they'll be fine. I like how well their secondary plays.
